Last Minute Shopping for Candles

Before work on Monday, I should have time to make it to the early Mass at Carmel for Candlemas - but wait! I need candles... (runs to car, drives into down, walks around, locates more-or-less suitable candles) - phew, not bad for a very hot and humid Saturday afternoon after 4pm.

Now I just need to remember to bring them with me.

I hear from a spy in Melbourne that they've already celebrated the Presentation at the Cathedral!  (The archdiocese has a special Candlemas Mass for religious for some reason, which rather oddly is transferred to the nearest Saturday.  Why?  Perhaps because the aged sisters and brothers now resemble SS Simeon and Anna...)

Drink Beer

It's hot - 38.2°C at maximum to-day, which would have been just about a record but for yesterday! - and what else to do than have a beer?

I've been enjoying a Huon Dark Ale brewed by the Two Metre Tall Company (why is the company so-named? because I met the owner, who is indeed two metre's tall).

If you can obtain some, it's a very fine drop.

The Little Office after the Use of Sarum


In the famous Holbein sketch of St Thomas More and his extended family, all are shewn with a book - but this is not so much, as it has been misinterpreted to demonstrate, that they are all Renaissance men to a man (and woman), but to manifest their piety as all good Englishmen would have wished in the days before the Reformation struck: for evidently the volume they are each holding is a copy of the Primer, or Book of Hours; led by the head of the family, they are about to pray, not the family Rosary more familiar to Catholics in later times, but an Hour from the Little Office (probably Vespers).

Now the Little Office according to the Use of Sarum (which was that used in England for the most part, until in time of persecution the Roman Use was adopted for Mass, Office and most things else) was more or less like the modern, but probably a little closer to the Dominican Use (and closer still to the Carmelite) in point of fact - at Matins, appointing always the same three Psalms (8, 18, 23) under one antiphon, Benedicta tu, appended to them only, and having the three usual prayers to Our Lady as Lessons, and with no Absolution, but a versicle after the Te Deum. (It can be followed via this link to the Burnet Psalter; note such gloriously mediæval spellings as Ympnus for Hymnus.)

At Lauds, the eight pre-Pius X psalms and canticle are given with only one antiphon, the first of the Christmastide ones in the Roman Little Office, and the little chapter is also non-Scriptural (oddly, but as commonly in mediæval books): Maria virgo semper letare que meruisti Christum portare celi et terre conditorem quia de tuo utero protulisti mundi salvatorem ("Mary Virgin rejoice alway who deservedst Christ to carry, of heaven and earth the Maker, for from thy womb came forth the world's Saviour). The Benedictus antiphon is the same as the Dominican. As was also common, the Collect at all the Hours was Concede nos famulos; and as also common in mediæval times, after it and Benedicamus Domino came very many commemorations (each an anthem, verse and collect): of

(Note that the exact saints commemorated tended to vary from Little Office to Little Office - recalling that all these were manuscript, handwritten copies until the late 15th century - according to the personal devotion of the user, who even added in favourite saints or, one suspects, didn't read all of the commemorations each and every day.)

(For the same reason, very often short Hours, really just larger commemorations, were inserted after each Hour of the Blessed Virgin - in the Burnet Psalter, these are the Hours of the Holy Cross and of the Compassion of the Virgin.)

As in the Carmelite Use, Prime of Our Lady has Psalms 53, 116 and 117 (not 84 as in the Roman) - the first being that always used at the start of Prime, the last, that great Psalm of the Exodus sung on Sundays in celebration of the still greater and more perfect redemption wrought for us through the Paschal Mystery of Christ. The hymn - used at all the Little Hours - in its older version as here reading Memento salutis auctor &c., begins, as I suggested in an earlier post, with the first stanza of Veni Creator Spiritus - for through the agency of the Holy Ghost (first stanza), Christ took flesh (second stanza) in His Mother Mary (third stanza), to the glory of the whole Trinity (fourth and last stanza). The psalm antiphon is again the same as that in the Roman Little Office for Christmastide, and the lesson is from Ecclesiasticus; but there is a short responsory as well as a versicle, and the Collect is Concede. Terce, Sext and None have successively Pss 119-121, 122-124, 125-127 as in the Roman Use, again with Christmastide antiphons, capituli from Ecclesiasticus, short responsories, versicles and the same Collect.

Sarum Vespers of Our Lady are quite different to begin with from what the Roman and Dominican have: for the psalmody consists of Pss 121-125, under one antiphon, and with a non-Scriptural little chapter that is in fact elsewhere used as an antiphon: Beata es virgo Maria que dominum portasti creatorem mundi genuisti eum qui te fecit et in eternum permanes virgo ("Blessed art thou, Virgin Mary, who didst carry the Lord the Creator of the world: thou didst give birth to Him Who made thee, and in eternity thou abidest a virgin"). It is evident then that the psalms of Vespers are repeats of those used earlier during Terce, Sext and None; in the Sarum Breviary, as in the Roman before 1912, these five psalms were those read on ferias on Tuesdays, and were perhaps chosen for their brevity and beauty, the Gradual Psalms being favourites for use at prayer.

Again as in the Carmelite Little Office, there are four psalms appointed for use at Compline de Beata according to the Sarum Rite: Pss 12, 42, 128 and 130. The anthem for these psalms is familiar to me from Marian feasts at Compline according to the Dominican Breviary - an instance of how texts were interchanged, or rather how there existed a great fund of items for liturgical use. Likewise, the hymn appointed is the second half of the Vesper hymn Ave maris stella; strangely, there is no short responsory. As was also a common mediæval custom, the Collect for Compline is not Concede, but Gratiam tuam quæsumus, familiar to moderns as the concluding prayer of the Angelus. After the intercalated Hours mentioned above comes the Salve Regina, with its last exclamations farced, as was the Sarum custom, with stanzas of a hymn, then a versicle and the usual collect afterward.

Catholic Humour

Thinking on the names of the Coo-ees' Priory participants - as I went on a walk up around the Cataract Gorge and back (after Confession), noting the peacocks and pademelons (small wallabies) looking the worse for wear in this humid heat, with only a fat little lizard scurrying quickly over the path - reminded me of some old jokes about religious, and gave me material for new ones:
  • At the Abbey of St Flossy (you know, St Flossy of the Broken Fingernail and the Tabernacle Doorkey), where Mother Abbess regularly reminds her daughters that "all change is pernicious," there is an ongoing battle between the severe, stout, matronly sacristan, Sr Mary Mediatrix of the Sacred Liturgy (seconded by her protege Sr Ciborium), and their new priest-chaplain Fr Gabriel Annunciator of the Second Advent with his offsider and server Br Baldacchino, the latter being (as their names suggest) members of that recent and flamboyant order of the Heralds of the Gospel or whatnot (whom, to quote from, ahem, Wikipedia, "strive for perfection, while always searching for the pulchritude in all their daily actions, even in the most private ones" - indeed...).  
  • Imagine the scene when, Sr Ciborium at the behest of her immediate superior having just arranged the flowers in their vases on all seven levels of the reredos of the High Altar, Fr Gabriel announces as he arrives that he's to say a Low Mass of Requiem, so down the flowers must come - imagine the scene, when Sr Mediatrix (as she prefers to be called) demands the usual Votive Mass of St Flossy their patron saint, only to be told by Fr Gabriel that, as he is to offer Mass in the Ordinary Form (cruel blow), and in the wider Church St Flossy is at best accorded an Optional Memorial once a year, seeing as it is his prerogative to choose which particular Mass is best for the congregation... battle lines are drawn!
And why is it that over at Australia Incognita the latest posting on Coo-ees' Priory is recorded, under "Ozz [sic] Blogs", before it appears at Coo-ees' Priory?  Several times I've clicked on the link to their most recent effusion, only to be told it doesn't exist - then to find it does after all, just not for several more hours (as happened with their item about Frs Mick & Pat Dobson).  Congratulations to Terra for having a faster-than-light internet connexion; or should I say, Sr Magdalene?

The Latest on the SSPX Hoo-ha

I see on Rorate Cæli that Bp Williamson has apologized to the Pope and and Cardinal Hoyos for having stirred up so much trouble by his comments at the very time, as an act of mercy, the Holy Father was having the excommunication against him and his fellow SSPX bishops lifted. I hope charity toward him will prevail: not to resile from rejecting his offensive views, but in the matter of his excommunication being lifted to see it as an important step toward reconciling the SSPX with Rome, and to distinguish this from the need to demonstrate that the Church rejects anti-Semitism as a perversion of the Gospel, which is for Jews and Gentiles alike.  

It must be borne in mind that, even given his ugly reported remarks, the bishop certainly asserted that at the least hundreds of thousands of Jews did perish at the hands of the Nazis, and I assume that, as any Catholic, he laments such wicked murders: which would certainly not stamp him an vicious anti-Semite.  (I must say I don't really understand why people would wish to deny or minimize the Holocaust; but surely a neo-Nazi, a full-blown anti-Semite would exult in such slaughter, not downplay it.  What a mystery evil is.)

Never have I had dealings with the SSPX, who of course come in all types from friendly to scary, and I have been told that Williamson is rather odd and extreme even among them, for saying such things as "Destroy your television, that overflowing sewer of Satanic filth" and then, the next day, recommending to his followers' attention a rather nice documentary he watched on the television the night before!

Sinister Street re the Little Office

Sir Compton Mackenzie brought out his novel Sinister Street in 1913-14, being an account of the boyhood and  youth of a young man, Michael Fane, in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods - it's a good read.  (The author, by the way, became a Catholic in 1914.)  Here, in the chapter entitled "Incense", Michael discovers religion, of the Anglo-Catholic variety, and at the moment is visiting his friend Bernard Prout: 
'Shall we say Vespers?' suggested Mr Prout. 'You know - the Small Office of the Blessed Virgin.  It won't take long.  We can say Compline, too, if you like.'
'Just as you like,' said Michael.

Michael was handed a thin sky-blue book labelled Office of the B.V.M.
'Latin or English?' queried Mr Prout.
'Whichever you like,' said Michael.
'Well, Latin, if you don't mind.  I'm anxious to learn Latin, and I find this is good practice.'
'It doesn't look very good Latin,' said Michael doubtfully.
'Doesn't it?' said Mr Prout.  'It ought to.  It's the right version.'
'I expect this is Hellenistic - I mean Romanistic - Latin,' said Michael, who was proud of his momentary superiority in knowledge.  'Greek Test* is Hellenistic Greek.'
'Do you know Greek?' asked Mr Prout.
'A little.'
Mr Prout sighed.

Nec nominetur

While reading Ephesians v at Matins to-day, I came across the words Fornicatio autem, et omnis immunditia, aut avaritia nec nominetur in vobis, sicut decet sanctos: aut turpitudo, aut stultiloquium, aut scurrilitas, quæ ad rem non pertinet; sed magis gratiarum actio.  I smiled as I read the words nec nominetur, since I know a very senior religious (one of the patres graviores) who uses this very phrase whenever a brother mentions something indecorous: Nec nominetur, frater, let it not be so much as named!  Of course, hearing this, friends and myself came up with a whole series of frivolous jussive subjunctives: Nec audetur, let it not be heard; Nec videtur, let it not be seen; Nec manducetur, let it not be eaten!

It reminds me of that other classic phrase that religious like to quote: Solus cum sola non præsumitur recitare Rosarium!

Bl Columba Marmion's Feast

From the Roman Martyrology, 2004 edition, for today the 30th of January:
16*.  In the monastery of St Benedict of Maredsous also in Belgium, of the blessed Columba (Joseph) Marmion, who, born in Ireland, made a priest and then made Abbot in the Order of St Benedict, that as father of cenobites and leader of souls to holiness of life, shone with spiritual doctrine and eloquence.
Bl Columba Marmion, pray for us, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

All Records Broken

I had cause to go into town to-day to have lunch with a congenial mate, and then off and around the city, stopping off to note down the times of service at the local Greek Orthodox church (they have Divine Liturgy one Saturday each month; a friend of mine worships with them in Hobart, and Fr Timothy their priest is a friend of a Catholic bishop I know), buying some groceries, looking for the latest copy of an Astronomy magazine I take, etc.

It was hot out in the sun, certainly, but I had no idea that at 3.30pm the temperature broke the all-time record: it reached 38.7°C - the hottest recorded since records began in 1884! That's 101.7°F.  Golly.

(I just noticed - the candle in its candlestick on the sideboard has bent over in the broiling heat.)

Scamander on the coast and Ross in the midlands were both 41.5°C at 3pm (new records for the mainland of Tasmania), Cressy and Launceston Airport inland from Launceston, plus Fingal all broke 40°C, Bushy Park and Ouse (both in the south, up the Derwent Valley) 38°C... extraordinary weather.

(Oh, and in Victoria Melbourne registered 45.1, while in South Australia, Adelaide was 43.1.  Perhaps the whole world is just going to drop into the Sun.)

Curiouser and Curiouser: SS Tatiana & Martina

To-day we keep the feast of St Martina, Virgin & Martyr (at least if one is observing the Extraordinary Form, as by reading the 1962 Breviary); and when last Sunday I worshipped with the Russian Catholics, they were keeping the memory of St Tatiana, Martyr at Rome (whose feast occurs on the 12th of January, which was the date according to the Julian Calendar).  I thought to find out a little more about them, particularly the latter, who was unfamiliar to me, and thereby hangs a tale.

First, St Martina: apparently the evidence for her early cultus is obscure; Pope Donus (remember him?) dedicated a church to her in the Roman Forum in 677, as the modern Martyrology notes on this day (30th January, n. 3 and reference in its index), and in 1634 her relics, alongside those of SS Concordius, Epiphanius and friends, were uncovered in a crypt in an old church (the same one dedicated to her, by then having decayed and therefore being rebuilt): moved by this, Pope Urban VIII, then gloriously reigning, had the church (her church, known by this point as Santi Luca e Martina) repaired, and ordered her Office inserted into the Breviary, with special hymns newly composed by himself.  Their Latin I found very hard, so I looked them up and here append them with a translation courtesy of an old book found transcribed online...

Second, St Tatiana: while the Byzantines keep her memory on the 12th of January, the modern Roman Martyrology makes no mention of her, again evidence of her early cultus in Rome seems hard to find, and it is even suggested, going on a great similarity between their Acts, that she and St Martina may be one and the same!  (She too, like St Martina, cast down idols by her prayers, was tormented but converted her very torturers by her miracles and constancy, thrown to a lion who refused to eat her, and finally suffered martyrdom by the sword, at Rome in the reign of Alexander Severus.)  Whatever of this skepticism, Tatiana is so popular among the Slavs that she is accounted Patron Saint of students, and her feast day is a public holiday in Belarus, Ukraine and Russia, called Tatiana Day or Student Day.

I do recall that at least her Kontakion was chanted at the Divine Liturgy, thus:
In your sufferings you shone brightly in the royal purple of your blood, and like a beautiful dove you flew to heaven, passion-bearer Tatiana. Therefore, always pray for those who honor you.

Pursuing Unity

Now, ecumenism that proceeds as far as overcoming bigotry, prejudice and hatred is all very commendable, and I understand that things have come a long way from the days when "No Catholic need apply" could be found in employment advertisements - but owing to a lack of any ecclesiology above the level of the congregation, and an entirely individualistic, simplistic concept of salvation ("Just me and Jesus"), many Protestants seem to think that having friendly relations between "denominations" (read "a thousand weltering sects") is enough, and that one can attend whichever church one likes - which is the indifferentism that has also infected many Catholics: that is the danger with ecumenism having achieved modest improvements in good manners, but no great reunification; and while among mainstream Protestants things like weekly celebrations of what they would term Holy Communion or the Eucharist have become much more common than before the ecumenical liturgical movement, there is really not much sign of a vast convergence in doctrine (with the most major achievement so far being the partial agreement on justification between Catholics and most Lutherans), and contrariwise the disastrous deviations in morals that have become increasingly permitted, even lauded ("their glory is their shame") among "mainline" Protestants have made the search for true Christian unity farcical.  Add into the mix such oddities as priestesses, and it quite makes a Catholic glad that his own Church's fractured unity in faith, morals, liturgy and all else is holding up as well as it is!

But for all that, there is hope on the horizon - our hope in Christ, the One Head of the Church, Who we trust is by His secret grace, by His Divine Providence, and by His instruments, the hierarchs of His Church, the Pope and Bishops in communion with him, is gathering all into one.  For this reason, I am very glad that it appears the Traditional Anglican Communion's application - without preconditions - to be admitted to Catholic Unity has been accorded a favourable hearing at Rome, and rumour has it (would that it were true) that Easter 2009 may bring the happy news.  I recall that the great hope of Anglo-Catholicism was for corporate reunion with Rome.  Would that the pontificate of Benedict XVI sees this accomplished - His Holiness is likewise attempting to heal the schism with the SSPX, after all.

Here in Launceston, I note that there is a local parish of the Anglican Catholic Church in Australia (a member of the TAC), and I am going to try and make contact, with an eye to finding out what is happening on the local level.  Who knows, if what is hoped for comes to pass I could join them at Mass!  From their Directory online, here are the details:

Hot and Bothered

I have had a very unpleasant night's sleep... at least back in Perth I had an airconditioner in the bedroom, but not here in Launceston, which is going through a very rare patch of being roastingly hot.  I've come downstairs and put on the one airconditioner - in the loungeroom. 

The weather looks to be vile and hot again to-day.

Last Sunday

Last Sunday I worshipped with the Russians, at the Russian Catholic Chapel of St Nicholas.  As the Russian Rite still keeps to the Julian calendar and the older method for calculating Easter, their Easter this year will be a week later than the Roman, and the Sunday just past - the 25th of January New Style (i.e. Gregorian) / 12th January Old Style (Julian) was the Sunday after the Theophany (since the Julian calendar is now thirteen days behind the Gregorian and hence the 6th of January O.S. is the 19th of January N.S.).  Being the 12th of January O.S., it was also the feast of St Tatiana, martyr at Rome (see icon at the top and details at the end of a Russian Orthodox web page).

This afforded much spiritual delight: the icon of the Baptism of the Lord was exposed for veneration, and at the Little Entrance was sung the Troparion and Kontakion of the Feast, after the Troparion of the Resurrection:
At Your baptism in the Jordan, O Lord, worship of the Trinity was revealed, for the Father's voice bore witness to You, calling You His "beloved Son", and the Spirit in the form of a dove confirmed the truth of these words.  O Christ God, Who appeared and enlightened the world, glory to You!

You have revealed Yourself to the world today, and Your light, O Lord, has shined upon us.  We recognize You and exclaim to You: "You have come and revealed Yourself, O Inaccessible Light."
It must be remembered that one common Eastern name for baptism is enlightenment or illumination - hence Christ shone out in the Jordan, shedding His healing rays on all men, manifesting Himself in His Epiphany.

After the service, Fr Lawrence said casually that he hadn't been sure whether it were the 32nd or the 33rd Sunday after Pentecost (as the Byzantine Rite enumerates all Sundays from one Pentecost right through until the pre-Lenten preparatory Sundays commence, there being no Advent as such, just the Nativity Fast), but that in any case the readings settled upon had been manifestly suitable!  I discover now that he was joking, since there are proper readings assigned for the Sunday after the Theophany, whatever Sunday after Pentecost it be, and the proper readings were those that were chanted.

The Gospel was taken from St Matthew iv, 12-17; the Epistle, from Ephesians iv, 7-13 (part of which I read in the Roman Breviary at Matins to-day, hence my being reminded of all this Liturgy) - and I have always found rather admirable the way the reader chants the Epistle, beginning on a very low note, and gradually ascending as he goes till he finishes on a very high one...

Hot Weather Update - II

Flinders Island set a new record for Tasmania today, with temperatures touching 41°C, and Launceston (my home once again) had its hottest day in a hundred years, reaching 37.1°C at Launceston Airport (in town itself, the temperature was a shade cooler).

I hope this is not the shape of things to come! (Recall that I joked that I was a climate refugee? Well, I didn't intend that I should have to flee Van Diemen's Land!)

Perhaps the heat can lead us to meditate on our latter end...

St Francis de Sales

I've tried, and failed, I'll admit, to read St Francis de Sales' Introduction to the Devout Life - oddly, since I find Fr Faber's perfervid prose fine, and ditto for St Louis de Montfort, somehow the Baroque style of de Sales doesn't sit well with me: too much sugar?

In any case, far be it from me to do anything but laud the great works of St Francis de Sales, who (as his hagiographic lesson says) by the help of God converted 72,000 Calvinist and other heretics to the Catholic Faith by his indefatigable preaching of the Divine Word and writing - "By his writings recording heavenly doctrine he enlightened the Church" - and so he was declared by Bl Pius IX a Doctor of the Church.

One of my missals provides the proper Mass of St Francis de Sales for his daughters, the nuns of the Order of the Visitation.  The Epistle is Ephesians iii, 7-21, and the Offertory, Apoc. ii, 19: "I know thy works and thy faith, and thy charity, and thy ministry, and thy patience, and thy last works, which are more than the former."  There is even a proper Preface:

(It is a little-known fact that the Oratorians lay claim to St Francis de Sales, since it is thought that he met, if not St Philip Neri himself, then his close disciples, and at one stage sought to establish an Oratory in his area of operations prior to his becoming a bishop.)

Herewith, the hymn at the Little Hours in the Little Office; it repays careful thought, with its emphasis on the Incarnation of Christ as the ground of our hope, on the Mother of God, therefore the mother of Grace and Mercy, as our protection from evil and refuge at death, and on adoration of the Trinity, One of Whom took flesh for us:

Hot Weather Update

As of 2 pm to-day, the temperature in Launceston reached 35.7°C, which is the highest temperature recorded here since before 1962 (it was hotter in the 1940's and back in 1908, it reached 37°C: weather reports indicate that the ongoing heatwave in Melbourne is of the same order as the 1908 heatwave, at the end of the Federation drought).

Death Comes for the Archbishop

No, this isn't a news flash, or a devout prayer that Such-and-such receive his reward very soon...  (For such, BTW, one sings the Media vita, or has a Requiem sung.)

Rather, I've just taken delivery of a favourite book of mine, which I've read over and again, but one of which I've never actually owned a copy: Death Comes for the Archbishop, by Willa Cather (originally published 1927).  It's an evocative, elegaic work about two French priests come to the South-West of the United States to reawaken its slumbering Catholicism and erect new dioceses among the Indians, Spanish/Mexicans and Americans there.  I thoroughly recommend it to all.

While I'm not so interested in reading most of her œuvre, I think I may buy a copy of Shadows on the Rock, set in 17th century Quebec...

More on the Little Office - II

Considerations revolving around the Little Office are in my mind at the minute; though most of what I've written I've previously thought on years back (I typed up the Dominican Rite Little Office a long time ago, for instance).

Well, what more to say?

It is evident that the main Hours - Matins, Lauds and Vespers - are taken from the Common of Our Lady and from Marian feasts: so the psalmody appointed for Matins and Vespers is that of feasts of the Blessed Virgin.

As for the remaining Hours, for the most part the psalms provided are chosen from the Gradual Psalms (Pss 119-133), except, in the Roman Rite Little Office, for Prime.  (In the Dominican Little Office, all fifteen of the Gradual Psalms are used, three each at Prime, Terce, Sext, None and Compline - with the result that the psalms used at Dominican Terce de Beata are the equivalent of those used at Roman Sext de Beata, and so forth.)  Why is Prime differently supplied?  I conjecture that the Roman choice of Pss 53, 84 and 116 depends upon the truth that, before St Pius X reformed the cursus of the Psalter in 1912, each and every day Prime in the Breviary began with Psalm 53, and so it was felt to be the opening psalm par excellence of Prime, and so needs must be used at Prime of the Blessed Virgin also.  I also guess that Psalm 84 is used because its verses well accommodate a Marian and Christological interpretation (hence its special appropriateness in Advent); and Psalm 116 is just a very short psalm of praise added on!

Next, consider the antiphons: in the usual form of the Little Office employed through the year, the psalm antiphons at Matins are from the Common of the Blessed Virgin (and these are also used during Advent and Christmastide, with only one change made during Advent, just as the Breviary prescribes), while at Lauds and through the Hours they are those of the Assumption of Our Lady (Assumpta est... Maria Virgo... In odorem... Benedicta filia... Pulchra es...), while the psalm antiphons for Vespers are simply those from the Common of the Blessed Virgin (Dum esset... Læva ejus... Nigra sum... Jam hiems... Speciosa facta...).  Indeed, while considering Vespers, the little chapter (Ecclus xxiv, 14), hymn (Ave maris stella) and collect (Concede nos) are all likewise the same as those appointed for Vespers of feasts of Our Lady; and so too at Lauds, the hymn O gloriosa Virginum is that from the Common also.  The hymn at Matins(Quem terra) is from the Common, and the three responsories given for Matins (though the last is rarely used except during Septuagesimatide and Lent, as the Te Deum trumps it) are Sancta et... Beata es... and Felix namque... - and these are Responsories i, iii, and vii (changing festivitatem to commemorationem, and adding a Gloria Patri) from Matins of the Common of feasts of Our Lady.  Interestingly, the Invitatory antiphon is from the feast of the Annunciation.

In the Advent form of the Little Office, the psalm antiphons for Lauds, Vespers and through the Hours are those used for the Annunciation on the 25th of March: Missus est... Ave Maria.. Ne timeas... Dabit ei... Ecce ancilla... - all of which are taken from the Gospel of the Annunciation, which the Little Office adopts to read as the Lessons of Matins for the Advent season; and of course the Collect employed at every Hour is Deus qui de beatæ, again from the feast of the Annunciation.  Similarly, the three responsories of Matins (Missus est... Ave Maria... Suscipe verbum...) are taken from the first Nocturn of Matins of the Annunciation (Responsories i, ii, and iii).  The capitula read at the Advent Little Office day Hours are from Isaias xi, 1-2 (at Lauds, Terce and Vespers - but at None in the Daily Office at the Annunciation); Isaias vii, 14-15 (at Prime and Compline - it is used at Lauds, etc. of the Annunciation in the Breviary); St Luke i, 32 (at Sext just as at the same Hour on the feast of the Annunciation); Ecclus xxiv, 19-20 (at None: this is the only reading that doesn't change in the Little Office, and that doesn't come from the Annunciation feast).  It must be noted, by the way, that many of these items proper to the Annunciation also occur or occurred during Advent in the Breviary, and may be originally Advent texts.  (This is probably the case for the antiphon Spiritus Sanctus used for all the Gospel canticles for the Little Office in Advent - it is drawn from the Annunciation Gospel, and is somewhat similar to an antiphon used at the Annunciation, but otherwise I haven't tracked down its source.)

During the time from Christmas until the Purification, the antiphons for Lauds, through the Hours and Vespers are those of the Octave Day of Christmas, now quite reasonably styled in the Ordinary Form the Solemnity of Mary, Mater Dei: for the (obviously Byzantine) psalm antiphons appointed are O admirabile... Quando natus... Rubum quem... Germinavit radix... Ecce Maria..., and the Benedictus and Magnificat antiphons Mirabile mysterium...  and Magnum hereditatis... (the latter repeated at Compline for the Nunc Dimittis antiphon) are likewise taken from that great feast.

Returning at last to the ordinary form of the Little Office outside of Advent and Christmastide, the texts of Scripture used for lessons and little chapters are nearly all from Ecclesiasticus xxiv, which in the literal sense is the self-praise of the Law of God personified, and in the mystical sense is the self-praise of the Blessed Virgin and of Christ.  These are the assigned texts: at Lauds, Cant. vi, 8; at Prime, Cant. vi, 9 (used, slightly modified, for the Benedictus antiphon on the feast of the Assumption); at Terce, Ecclus xxiv, 15 and at Sext, Ecclus xxiv, 16 (the Breviary appoints both passages, joined together, for use at Sext on feasts of the Virgin); at None, Ecclus xxiv, 19-20 (just as for None of Marian feasts according to the great Office); at Vespers, Ecclus xxiv, 14 (used in the Breviary for Marian feasts at Lauds, etc.); and at Compline, Ecclus xxiv, 24.  Also, during the course of the year, there are proper Collects at each Hour (and with these may be numbered the Absolution and Blessings at Matins), which are drawn from the large stock of Marian orations in the Church's liturgy (such as those appended to each of the Marian anthems sung after Compline).

All that really remains is to enquire as to the sources of the antiphons for the Benedictus, Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis through the year.  Throughout Eastertide, the Regina cæli is employed, that familiar anthem.  At Compline, otherwise the ancient Sub tuum (first recorded in Greek in the third century or earlier) is used.  At Vespers, a short and rather mediæval anthem is appointed: Beata Mater; and at Lauds, a longer text, said to go back to Augustine (though I suspect a mediæval writer adopting his mantle), the Beata Dei Genitrix.

One last item: the hymn Memento rerum Conditor, used at all five of the Little Hours, has a curious source - for it's a pastiche.  The title stanza comes from the Christmas hymn at Vespers by Prudentius (I think), but there is the third stanza! and the middle stanza is a standard mediæval plea to Our Lady, with the third being the standard doxology employed on all Marian feasts. Apparently in mediæval times, a stanza from the Veni creator Spiritus was also inserted, in honour of the Holy Ghost, Who also had a commemoration (antiphon, verse and collect) at each and every Hour.

P.S.  It really ought be noted that the Little Office according to the Use of Rome as we have it to-day is apparently somewhat reworked compared to the many variant forms of the Little Office in mediæval times.  I recall reading that at the time St Pius V brought out the Roman Breviary (containing the Little Office), some changes were made in it in accord with the liturgical spirit of the times.  The Dominican Rite Little Office, as given in an earlier posting, is much more mediæval in its antiphons, for instance, and especially in its provision of three prayers to Our Lady as Lessons for Matins - these three prayers were exceedingly commonly used in mediæval versions of the Little Office, and I think they bear repeating here; note how they rhyme:

Matins for St Peter Nolasco, Wednesday of the 3rd Week after Epiphany

I was quite moved by to-day's Matins Lessons.  First, there is the wonderful Pauline hymn contained in Ephesians i, 1-14 (which the modern Office I think very rightly has taken, somewhat abbreviated to only verses 3-10, to use as a canticle at Vespers on Mondays); and then, the short account of the life of St Peter Nolasco.  His collect, too, on which together with allied prayers I've blogged earlier, is noteworthy.

Herewith, Ephesians i, 1-14:

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the will of God, to all the saints who are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus.  Grace be to you, and peace from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

I was once privileged while on retreat to hear a masterly exegesis of this beautiful passage.

As I pray, after the example of the Byzantine Rite and of Bl Elizabeth of the Trinity, O.C.D., "Make me a praise of Thy glory, O Most Holy Trinity, consubstantial and undivided!"

Hot Weather

Yesterday afternoon found me in Melbourne, walking the length (2 km) of the shopping strip that is Chapel Street, South Yarra, in hot weather - moving up from the high twenties to the low thirties (but I was back in my airconditioned hire car by the time it reached the day's maximum of 35.6°C at 6 pm).  But I congratulated myself at being about to decamp to Tasmania, so escaping the predicted scorching heat...

Well, to-day has found us afflicted with 33°C in Launceston - unheard of!  And worse is to come... 34°C on Thursday, then 33°C for Friday and Saturday, which for Tasmanians is almost inconceivably warm.  (In the last forty-odd years, it's only ever been as hot as 35°C in January.)

At least we have airconditioning in the dining and lounge rooms.

As for the Mainland, apparently it has been hideously hot in Melbourne (topping out at 42.9°C, again, weirdly enough, at 6 pm), and even hotter in Adelaide: minimum 31°C, maximum 45°C!  Adelaide will have much the same to-morrow, and then only slightly cooler all week; Melbourne, two more days of 43°C, and only then a bit cooler.  

Yuck.

The Little Office and the Office of the Dead

Among pious layfolk in past times, not only was the Little Office of Our Lady read, but also the Office of the Dead (to say nothing of the Penitential Psalms or Litanies of the Saints).

Now, interestingly enough, the three Nocturns of Matins of the Dead have on average 49 psalm-verses, Lauds have 64, and Vespers, 40.  Matins and Lauds together are known as (the) Dirge, from the first antiphon of Matins, Dirige; Vespers is for the same reason known as Placebo, its opening word (as Deus in adjutorium, etc. is not used).  Hence, Dirge and Placebo together have on average 153 psalm-verses, and this total, when added to that of the Hours of the Blessed Virgin (to wit, 237, as I calculated below), gives 390 - which is almost exactly the portion of psalm-verses counted up in the Breviary each day.

This has interesting consequences - for instance, a priest unable to say the Breviary for some reason could theoretically apply to have his obligation commuted to reciting the Little Office and the Office of the Dead together, since he would be praying about the same amount of holy psalms and lessons, pious hymns and prayers, so to speak!  (In mediæval days, it was common for religious and laity to have committed the Little Office to memory, and one assumes this would also be the case for Placebo and Dirge.  In more recent times, a priest unable, through failing eyesight, say, to read his Breviary would usually get his obligation commuted to reciting 15 decades of the Rosary daily, which at a reasonable pace takes 45 minutes to an hour.  I wonder if these days all 20 decades would be required?  But oh no, I forgot, the modern Divine Office being so short it would seem that only 10 decades would suffice... and in any case, few priests would know or care to ask for such a commutation, seeing as it is an open secret that many don't pray the Office at all.)

Dominican Rite Little Office

Since I don't think this is available online, here is the whole of the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary according to the Dominican Rite; I think the details of its differences from the Roman Little Office will be evident to those familiar with the latter.
