Sobrie, et juste, et pie vivamus in hoc sæculo, exspectantes beatam spem, et adventum gloriæ magni Dei, et Salvatoris nostri Jesu Christi.
We should live soberly, and justly, and godly in this world, looking for the blessed hope and coming of the glory of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.
(Titus ii, 12b-13)
This miserable and naughty world with all its pomps and vanities will draw to an end soon enough for each one and for all of us; so keep the Four Last Things ever in view!
With this I pair the opening of Hora novissima, tempora pessima sunt, vigilemus by Bernard of Morlaix, in Neale's translation:
The world is very evil, the times are waxing late,
Be sober and keep vigil, the Judge is at the gate.
The Judge Who comes in mercy, the Judge Who comes in might,
Who comes to end the evil, who comes to crown the right.
Be sober and keep vigil, the Judge is at the gate.
The Judge Who comes in mercy, the Judge Who comes in might,
Who comes to end the evil, who comes to crown the right.
