Christmas at St Anne's in Perth

My old parish priest, Fr Rowe, sent me this photograph of the sanctuary at St Anne's Church, Belmont, new headquarters of the Latin Mass in Perth, Western Australia. (It also features himself and the two workers who made the altar rail gates and restored the Marian altar, not shown.)

I remember what an ugly sanctuary it was back when it was arranged for the modern Mass: but the forward "Cranmer table" was ripped out, its low platform replaced with a high stepped affair, and a proper high altar put in, with altar rails installed.  Anything iconoclastic done to a church can be reversed.  

Here are the details about Christmas Masses at St Anne's (11 Hehir St, Belmont):

Christmas Eve Monday 24th December: 11.00pm Rosary & Carols, 12.00 Midnight Mass.

Christmas Day Tuesday 25th December 2012: 8.00am Dawn Mass; 10.00am Day Mass. 

Please note confessions are not able to be heard before these Christmas Masses unless arranged with the priest, except during Rosary & Carols at 11.00pm before Mass. (Normally, Fr Rowe hears confessions before all Masses, but at Christmas this is precluded by all the extra burdens.)

New Year’s Day, the Octave Day of Christmas, Tuesday 1st January 2013: Masses at 8.00am & 10.00am & 6.00pm - the plenary indulgence for the faithful who publicly recite the Veni Creator on New Year's Day may be gained on the usual conditions by joining in the singing of this hymn, which will be sung after each of these Masses.

Sunday Masses at St Anne's are as follows: 7.30am, 9.30am, & 11.30am.  (From memory, the 9.30am Mass is the Missa cantata.)

Diaconal Ordination

Of your charity, pray for Brennan Sia, who will be ordained a deacon by the Archbishop of Perth on the 7th of December.  I got to know Brennan through friends of mine when I was living in Perth some years ago, and more recently on some of my trips to Rome I have met up with him amongst others, since he did some years of study at the NAC (where I was most hospitably received for lunch at the invitation of several Australian seminarians, including Brennan).  God willing, once he proves himself as a deacon, the People of God may hope to see him serve the Lord as a priest in due season.

Pontifical Mass in Perth, W.A.

My former Parish Priest, Fr Rowe, alerted me that photographs of a recent Pontifical Mass at his church, St Anne's, may be perused via this link.

It brings back happy memories, seeing so many Roman vestments, birettas, and assorted paraphernalia.  Unlike Eastern Australian Traddies, those way out West prefer a 1950's style.

I'm particularly pleased to see that the sacred ceremonies included the tonsure of one of the Perth seminarians...

Ad multos annos!

Ad Orientem at Perth Seminary

A Western Australian correspondent informs me that, for some time now, Mass on Saturdays at St Charles' Seminary, Perth, has been said ad orientem versus; and that for the first time – when my friend was there a month ago – the same Eastward stance has been taken at Sunday Mass.  I hear that the singing of the Ordinary (including Latin for the Sanctus) and the choice of decent hymns were both pleasing, and that it was good to see the seminarians alike all in cassocks: indeed, the Rector, Monsignor Long (who was the chief celebrant), sets a very good example to them by always wearing his.

I recall how Bp Jarrett of Lismore likes to quote the Apostle's words "Let all things be done decently and in order" (I Cor. xiv, 40) when describing the unpretentious and sober manner in which Mass ought be said, the priest being thus a servant of the sacred liturgy, not a third-rate actor in a melodrama, nor a robot: I recall the then Fr Long saying Mass in the Catholic college chapel at the University of Western Australia, and such was the ars celebrandi he employed then, and still does now: without affectation "doing the red, saying the black".  I would think that this is one very important aspect of Pope Benedict's patient hopes for resacralization of worship – a making clear what it really is.

At Communion, it was also pleasing to hear of various of the seminarians quite unselfconsciously kneeling to receive Our Lord, as a godly freedom obtained as to which of the lawful postures for reception were employed, for the particular spiritual good of each person (for it stands to reason that, given the choice between Communion "kneeling on the tongue" or "standing on the hand", one should receive in the method best calculated to increase one's reverence).

Do spare a prayer, gentle reader, for the seminarians and staff of this seminary, which, ever since its reopening by Archbishop Barry Hickey (now very soon to retire) has produced a good crop of new priests.  Pray that the Archdiocese of Perth may be granted a strong, confident, Catholic successor in due time, that this work, and all else, may continue to grow and flourish.

By contrast, I recall attending one Mass, about a decade ago, at the Melbourne seminary, which got the priest who said it into enormous trouble (and some of the seminarians as well), just because, celebrating a Marian feast day by using the altar in the adjacent grotto, he said Mass ad orientem; the rumour – itself revealing – was that he said a Latin Mass (this in the days when to even imagine doing so was considered naughty if not worse), whereas it was just a normal vernacular celebration at which, by reason of the altar used being up against the back wall of the grotto, he had no option but to stand facing it.  

What a difference a decade makes!

Be aware if you arrive late there are usually seats up the front so feel free to move up there.  Each pew can comfortably fit six people so please move up to be courteous to others so they can find a space to sit.

O Patrick, Hail!

Far away in Perth, W.A., my friends will be readying all for the official opening of the newly refurbished St Anne's Church in Belmont, as the new home of the Latin Mass community in that Archdiocese: fittingly, the solemnities will begin with the blessing of the church in the context of a Holy Hour, ending with Solemn Benediction, followed at once by Solemn High Mass!

I attended Mass earlier to-day, glad that thereby I truly was at the same Altar as my faraway friends, and was delighted to sing "O Patrick, hail", which happens to be my old school song.  (Yes, I know that it's double alleluia is entirely unlenten, but, well...)  Here are all the verses:

O Patrick, hail, who once the wand’ring race

Didst win to be God’s faithful resting-place,

And Ireland’s love to soothe his wounded face.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

*In dreams thou heard’st thy distant children cry

I sometimes wondered (see the first stanza) why St Patrick had a wounded face... till I realized that this alludes rather to the Face of Christ, wounded in His Passion.

The last verse, so eschatological, always brings a lump to my throat.

St Patrick, pray for us.

Three Missæ Cantatæ!

I had the pleasure of a telephone conversation with Fr Rowe this evening; it was good to hear from him, and I was very happy to hear that for the feast of Holy Mary's Assumption this year, he sang three Masses - yes, he had three Missæ cantatæ! - two at the Pro. (at 10am and 6pm) and one over at Good Shepherd, Kelmscott (at noon).

Just previous to the liturgical reforms there died in England a priest who had such a choir as permitted him to sing High Mass every day; but to sing three Masses in a day! Excellent! Very pastorally solicitous to his faithful people! And very devout to Our Lady to do so too.

(This Sunday, Fr Rowe will be having a sung Mass in Bunbury, since five young people will be making their First Communion: wonderful.)
